Urkel Banned In Moscow???
Wireless Flash News Service, 11/13/1996
Family Matters
star Jaleel White may be a star to American teens but his character Steven Urkel is causing
controversy in Russia. A religious magazine called Krygyzstan Christianity says a
Moscow-based religious group is organizing a parental boycott of Family Matters reruns on
Russian TV because the character's antics are "...too sexual." Spokesman Molotov Gvardii says
Urkel's lustful feelings for Laura Winslow -- the character played by Kellie Shanygne Williams
-- are inappropriate viewing for teens in his country and he's demanding that the show only be
aired after 11 p.m. when most Russian teens are asleep. However, some teenage Urkel fans say if
Family Matters is banned, they will protest by hiking their jeans up above their calves like Urkel
and playing accordions at school until the show is back on the air at an earlier hour.
*Now isn't it ironic that the show is controversy in Russia, when in the
storyline, that's where Steve's parents moved to. :)
