Cast & Characters

  1. Whatever happened to Judy (Jaimee Foxworth)?
This is the most frequently asked question about Family Matters. The character of Judy was merely written out the series in the fifth season without an explanation. There are rumors circulating Judy and Jaimee Foxworth which can be found in the
Rumors section, but it is not true. Jaimee Foxworth is current in an R&B group called S.H.E. on Interscope Records. Jaimee even has had a personal statement on the disappearance of Judy: "I guess Judy went upstairs to her room and never came back. She's probably still up there."

  2. Whatever happened to Rachel (Telma Hopkins)?
Telma Hopkins, who played Harriette's nosey sister Aunt Rachel, left the series in the fourth season to be in a series of her own. She starred in Getting By, playing Dolores, a single mother of two boys (Deon Richmond, Merlin Santana) who shared a house with her best friend, Cathy (Cindy Williams), and her two daughters (Ashleigh Blair Sterling, Nicki Vannice). The show premiered ironically as part of the TGIF line-up as a midseason show, but was unfortunately cancelled. It was then picked up by NBC to air alongside Saved By The Bell: The College Years as part of NBC's family Tuesday line-up, which also didn't last. Afterwards, Telma made a few guest appearances on various TV shows and movies, including reprising her role as Rachel for a few episodes of Family Matters.

  3. Why did Harriette change on CBS?
In the final season of Family Matters, JoMarie Payton made a statement that she felt she was being "creatively stifled" by her role and decided to leave the show in December 1997. The series did not want to do a death or divorce episode to explain Harriette's disappearance, so instead the series kept the character but with a different actress, Judyann Elder. There have been reports of JoMarie's displeasure of the series revolving more around Urkel and less around the Winslow family, for which the series was created for. She also tried to submit ideas for episodes with more Winslow family-themed plots, and they were turned down. Now, JoMarie is practicing more on her acting, singing, and dancing. So far, she has released a jazz album and has made guest appearances on other TV shows, including a recurring character on NBC's Will And Grace.

  4. Why did Jaleel White not start the show until the middle of the first season?
Jaleel was only supposed to appear in the episode, "Laura's First Date", but his appearance was so well-recieved by the audience, he continued making guest spots until he became a regular cast member in the second season.

  5. Was Maxine always Laura's best friend?
In the first seaosn, Laura had a best friend named Penny (Ebonie Smith), who had a crush on Laura's brother, Eddie. From the second season on, Laura's best friend was Maxine (Cherie Johnson).

  6. Didn't Richie grow up kind of fast?
Very fast. Richie was a baby, played by Joseph Julius Wright, in the first second. But from the second season on, he was a little kid played by Bryton McClure.

  7. How many different characters did Jaleel White play on Family Matters?
Jaleel White, of course, played Steve Urkel. He also played Steve's cousin, Myrtle Urkel, a "southern dumb belle" from Biloxi, MS who had a crush on Eddie. Then he played Steve's suave alter-ego, Stefan Urquelle, who eventually became a separate person after Steve cloned himself. Next he played a kung-fu master modeled after "the dragon", Bruce Lee Urkel. Making one-time only appearances, he played Steve Winslow, an actual member of the family who couldn't stand Laura Urkel, a cross between nerd and musician as Elvis Urkel, and Steve's hardcore cousin OGD, Original Gangsta Dawg.

  8. How many other cast members have been an "Urkel"?
In the Christmas episode, "It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Urkel", Kellie Williams was the first cast member to become an Urkel by portraying Laura Urkel. Reginald VelJohnson and Darius McCrary have played Carl Urkel and Eddie Urkel respectively in different episodes. And Reginald VelJohnson, Bryton McClure, and Orlando Brown had the opportunity to fight alongside Bruce Lee Urkel as Bruce Lee Carl, Bruce Lee Richie, and Bruce Lee 3J respectively. Reginald VelJohnson also played Myrtle's father, Big Daddy Urkel. Even in a werid twist, in the episode "Trading Places", Jaleel White played Stefan Urquelle trying to pretend to be Steve Urkel.

  9. Wasn't there a bully that Waldo hung out with before becoming friends with Eddie?
Yes, and that bully was Willie, played by Larenz Tate. The characters of Willie, the bad bully who hated Urkel, and Waldo, his bumbling sidekick, appeared in a few episodes of the second season. But Larenz soon got a part in the CBS Redd Foxx sitcom, The Royal Family. The show unfortunately ended due to the death of Redd Foxx, but Larenz moved on to a number of acting roles in movies such as Menace II Society, Dead Presidents, and Love Jones. Shawn Harrison, who plays Waldo, stayed on the series and eventually became a regular in the third season.

  10. Didn't Jaleel White have a TV special?
Yes. Jaleel White had a one-hour special called Urkel's Better Half: The Jaleel White Special. It was a special to cash in on the Urkel popularity plus allow people to see Jaleel White act as someone other than Steve Urkel (even though Urkel was in the special, of course). There were a number of guests, including Tatyana Ali (The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air), Little Richard, Vanessa Williams, and Bumper Robinson (Amen and also a regular on Family Matters). None of the cast from Family Matters, other than recurring actor Bumper Robinson, were in the special.

  11. Has Jaleel White done voice-overs for cartoons?
Yes. He has provided the voice of Sega video game mascot Sonic The Hedgehog for three animated series: Sonic The Hedgehog, The Adventures Of Sonic The Hedgehog, and Sonic Underground where he also provides the voices for Sonia and Manic. He was the voice of Bladebeak in the animated feature, The Quest Of Camelot, and he also voiced Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as a teenager in the straight-to-video release, Our Friend Martin.

  12. Isn't Carl the same cop in Die Hard?
Reginald VelJohnson played Sgt. Al Powell, not Carl Winslow, in the Die Hard movies. Actually, Reginald has mentioned saying that most of his roles that he has taken or been offered has been cop roles due to his portrayal of Sgt. Al Powell and officer Carl Winslow.

  13. Where are Steve's parents? Were they ever in an episode?
Steve's parents, who eventually moved to Russia without telling him, have been mentioned and even a couple of times, but they were never ever seen (even in a picture of baby Urkel held by his mother in one episode, the mother's face was blocked by Urkel's big head). I guess this was a running gag, like the character of Wilson in Home Improvement. What we do learn about his parents is that his dad, Doc Urkel, his mom's name is Roberta, and that his parents moved to Russia without even telling him. An Urkel parent we did see was Myrtle's dad, Big Daddy Urkel, played by Reginald VelJohson.

  14. Did Steve ever get Laura?
Yes. In the ninth season, Steve and Laura fell in love and got engaged to be married, but the series ended before there ever was an aired wedding.

  15. Did Myrtle ever get Eddie?
No, and she also quit trying. After changing her image for him, it became apparent to Myrtle that it is unlady like for her to continue pursuing and gave up. The episode, "Don't Make Me Over!", closed off with various clips of Myrtle, making it Myrtle's final appearance of Family Matters.

  16. Does Jaleel White really know how to play basketball?
Don't let the Urkel character fool you. Jaleel White is a good basketball player, playing for fun, in celebrity tournaments with Magic Johnson, and during the Stay In School specials for the NBA All-Star Weekends. He has even been able to show off his basketball skills in a few episodes of Family Matters.

  17. What kind of car did Urkel drive?
The lovely "clown car" that Steve drove was a BMW Isetta.

  18. Whatever happened to Waldo (Shawn Harrison)?
Shawn Harrison left the series in its eigth season. He was only explained as leaving Maxine a "Dear Max" letter in the episode "Love Triangles" and was never mentioned since. After the leave, Shawn Harrison did do a guest appearance on Moesha.

  19. Whatever happened to Mother Winslow (Rosetta LeNoire)?
As the series got older and so did Rosetta LeNoire, she had less scenes until she eventually was no longer a cast member. She did, however, make a guest appearance in the ninth season Christmas episode, "Deck The Malls".

  20. Was Richie (Bryton McClure) no longer a regular in the ninth season?
Yes. Bryton McClure was not in every episode of the ninth season. Anytime he was in the episode, alongside 3J (Orlando Brown), he was listed as a special guest star .

  21. What was Mother Winslow's first name?
Mother Winslow's first name was Estelle.

  22. Was Richie and Rachel's last name Winslow?
No. Rachel and Richie's last name was Crawford.
